Given any trapezoid, if the parallel top and bottom are a and b, respectively, and the corresponding height (altitude) is h, the area is (a+b) × h /2. But why?
To see why, we take two congruent copies of a trapezoid and make a parallelogram with the same height and a base of (a+b). Such a parallelogram can be easily converted to a rectangle with a base of (a+b) and height (h, or width), and, accordingly, an area of (a+b) × h. Why do we have to divide that by 2? Well, it is because we want to know the area of the trapezoid. Of course, there are other ways to explain it. One way or the other, it goes back to what we know about rectangles or other shapes.
Two versions are provided to demonstrate the process behind A= (a+b) × h /2. The trapezoid is just a random one. Have fun.

Gear set for cutting 10 pitch on a Hardinge TL 3D Print Model
Summary
To start, I measured the center to center on the two shafts on my Hardinge TL lathe that are used for external gearing. After some math I worked out that the ratio I needed was 25:16, with the big gear on the top. Knowing that I simply made two gears with a totally random pitch that had the right pitch circles to get the ratio right (48mm pitch diameter on the small one). FYI, going to 150 teeth on the big one gets the teeth too small for reliable printing. The set I actually built is 75 tooth by 60 tooth; sorry about the file name!
In use, you have to remove the external gear cover AND shift into the external gearing mode (all the way right on the quick change) AND set the three change to “1”.
These gears are a bit scary to use; stay the heck away from then while running! A little way oil (sticky) is a good idea. I was able to cut the 10 pitch Aluminum thread I needed using these without any visible damage on the teeth or bore.

Its been a long time since I printed these, so I’m not totally sure what I did. I would use at least 3-4 shells with a 0.4mm nozzle.
You will need to ream out the bore and clean the keyway with a needle file. The bottom edges of the teeth are likely to need cleaning too, though you might be able to run one with the build surface toward the lathe and the other away from the lathe and get away with minimal finishing. -

Minimalistic fan bracket / mount for 40mm fan on a nema 17 3D Print Model

I wanted to put a fan to a drive motor (nema 17), but do not have a lot of space for it, so I created this minimalistic fan bracket. Not ideal in any way, shape or form, but it does provide some cooling when there is little room for a fan.
Mount the bracket to a 40mm fan and glue the centre part with CA glue to the motor. Nothing more to it.

LCD Knob with a thumb sub-knob 3D Print Model
Summary
As for many of us, the knob that came in the kit was not working properly and got lost on the second day (or night, not sure, not enough sleep).
I wanted a small knob, that would allow to quickly change the speed of the print (as I’m twitchy during the night prints, usually worse by 4 am).
I’ve added a finger-tip knob onto the knob, to allow for faster/lazier spinning of the dial.
If it works for you, I’m glad. If it doesn’t, don’t bill me for the fill.
PS: Feel free to adjust the height (Z) of the knob.
Original size was slightly exaggerated in order to accommodate for the bracket of the spool holder, which is a bit too close to the knob. -

3.5″ hard drive mount to a flat surface 3D Print Model
Summary
These mounts will fasten a 3.5″ hard drive to a flat surface. They are inspired by tkbletsc’s hard drive brackets (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2352211), using the heights and sizes in his model, but created from scratch in TinkerCAD. The ledge lifts the HDD appx 6mm from the surface for cooling. The screw holes are 4mm internal diameter, and will fit standard hard drive screws.
This is the first model I have created and uploaded. I needed some hard drive mounts for an arcade machine project. All the other mounts I found where too large and would take too long to print, so I created this. Each mount is only about 2g and prints in around 15 mins (according to Cura 3.1 with a 0.2 layer height and 20% infill). -

Tablet Stand / Tripod (works with Samsung Tab A 8.0 2017) 3D Print Model
Summary
A tripod holder and stand for my son’s Samsung Tab A 8.0 (2017). It uses standard #2 pencils ;), cut to the same length, as legs. This fits around the rubber/plastic case for the tablet. It is currently holding tightly due to the press fit of the dovetail joint.
I used the Tablet Tripod Mount by lynce9956 as inspiration for my design. My son liked his design but wanted a few things different so we redesigned it from scratch. If you print yours at a finer resolution than I used, 0.32 mm layer height, the dovetail joint might fit a bit loser. My suggestion would be to add an elastic band in the dovetail area such as what was done by lynce9956. They used two eye screws and a rubber band to create tension to hold it closed.

I printed this in a really rough layer height as my son was being impatient and just wanted this stand to use his tablet as a camera. The large layer lines meant the fit was just slightly tight, but this worked well as I didn’t have to add any springs or elastics to tension it around the tablet. I printed this laying on it’s side so that the layers would help increase the strength. (i.e. the layer are parallel to the stress).

Taranis Pistola: A pistol grip RC controller with a Taranis X7 inside! 3D Print Model
Summary
I got tired of super expensive commercial surface receivers for my RC cars. At the same time, they only offer typically 4 or less channels. That was all fine and good for the standard RC car, but crawling rigs and semi-trucks often have additional features that could benefit from having additional channels.
I love my Taranis for quads and other aircraft but I never quite got the hang of driving with sticks.
Soooo, I bought a new Taranis X7, tore it apart, printed a new shell, and I can now present the Taranis Pistola!
This allows for up to 8 normal channels of control, plus you can link receivers together to get 32 (I think, I’ve never done it). You also get all the flexbility of the Taranis ecosystem like OpenTX, which allows you to mix and twist the controller to do just about anything you need.
Receivers are typically less than $30, with some 8 channel receivers in the low $20’s.
As for the design, I used a wheel and trigger cluster from a standard Traxxas remote, mostly because they are available cheap (or free if you or a friend has an unused unit lying around). You need to clip a plug from the Taranis and solder it to the potentiometer leads from the Traxxas cluster. I made a design decision to omit the other two proportional controls (the right stick) and two of the trim rockers (although one is located on the back of the remote as you need it to enter USB mode). I used a standard LiFE battery that is commercially available for $10. All pcb’s are retained from the original radio. The antenna comes soldered directly to a pcb, so I desoldered and added a Ufl./IPX connector to the board (there are pads for this purpose) or you could order an SMA to bare wire and solder directly to the board. I didn’t want to re-use the stock antenna because I wanted some flexibility in antenna choice.
If you can solder (or learn) this is decently straightforward. I posted a lengthy PDF with instructions that should get you most of the way if not all the way there. Start to finish this is about $120 + filament, which is pretty cheap for an 8 channel surface radio, especially since one does not exist commercially!

I printed the front face up with support, some printers will need a raft. The back I printed backside down, no supports. The grip needs no supports, I printed it standing up. The top I printed at a weird angle, back down with supports. I should have all stl’s in the correct orientation for printing, but please double check. -

Honda motorcycle keychain (a remix) 3D Print Model

I scaled it down to be 50mm long and added a solid backing between the wings so I could do a filament color switch. Printed using TPU.
First I created a 2D outline using the following command in OpenSCAD:

and exported a DXF.
Then I imported the DXF into Onshape to remove the gaps between the wings and extrude it a few mm, then exported that as STL.

Pi-Zor: a bitcoin cold wallet 3D Print Model
Summary
The is a case for the Raspberry Pi that is intended to be used as a Bitcoin hardware cold wallet. Note that this will never be as secure as a wallet using a secure element, like a Ledger Nano. The project’s namesake, the Trezor, doesn’t have a secure element, but is still more secure since its designed by security minded professionals, rather than a DIY project using a Pi Zero. The plus side, is you build it yourself so you know what’s in there, and if you take precautions, then you can probably keep this secure.

How I Designed This
I used OnShape to develop the case. Its kind of a tight fit, but the case does close.
The “middle plate” part is an unintended consequence of not having the right screws. I’m looking to get some M2x2 waver head screws for mounting the parts to the case.
I chose the 128×128 LCD specifically because it was 30mm wide and had more pixels than OLED displays used by other projects. (see http://hackaday.io/project/9564-rpi-zero-wifi-enabled-hardware-password-manager for one such project that uses OLED). More pixels are desirable for QRCode bandwidth.Future Possibilities
Some ideas on how this may evolve:
A PCB “bonnet” that holds the LCD, and 5-way switch, and maybe some extra hardware
A real-time clock module to remember the time
A lipo battery? (Its already pretty tight in there, not sure if I can fit it without making the case bigger)
Move to buttons (similar to http://hackaday.io/project/9564-rpi-zero-wifi-enabled-hardware-password-manager). The 5-way switch was quick and easy, but I think buttons would be better.

Animalarm – a sensor to control pet movements 3D Print Model
Summary
A simple but elegant project to create a “pet zone alarm” in your house. It uses infrared motion detectors to sense when a pet (or small child) is moving through a doorway or hall and sends out a loud tone. It does not beep when a (tall) person moves through the same area. With a bit of training animals recognise where they are welcome – without having to use physical gates.
NOTE: WIP – Some electronic component values are subject to change

Caveats
Obviously, you will need to be able to get the PCB manufactured. The files are all there to do so and it is very cheap. And of course you need the skills and equipment to source and assemble the electronics!
If you want to use a different buzzer, you will need to make your own shell – but the electronics at least will work for you… Application
There is a single trimpot to set the length of the beep, once the alarm is triggered. You can also change component values (C1 in particular) to alter the delay before the alarm goes of before triggering the alarm. Set it longer if the system is triggering falsely.
There are pads in the 3D print design at the top and bottom of the Animalarm. Use double sided tape or bluetack at those locations to mount the alarm on the wall / doorway.
How I Designed This
How this works
The Animalarm uses two PIR (passive infrared) detectors to detect and discriminate between pets and people. The detector needs to be mounted on a door / wall about a meter above the ground. One PIR “looks down”, the other “looks up” to detect motion. A pet only triggers the lower detector and sets of the alarm. If a person is detected, the alarm either never triggers or is shut off.
The circuitry is built around a single CMOS chip and a few transistors – and of course battery, buzzer and PIR detectors. The circuitry is incredibly power efficient, drawing less than 30µW normally and only 10mA when triggered. This means the batteries will probably last a year in normal use… Electronics

Summary
I don’t want to step on any toes, so he’s not a 100% faithful reproduction of Ash. But, he’s got a boomstick, a chainsaw for a hand, and prints ok at 50-55mm scale.
I included the .blend and graphscad .scad saves if you want to remix it. The character is from makehuman, so composed of multiple meshes.
The boomstick is done in SCAD then moved to blender for sculpting.
The chainsaw was done in SCAD and brought over to blender for compositing with the other models.

Mebi 130 – a 130mm fpv quadcopter frame 3D Print Model
Summary
I crashed and broke my Youbi 130 frame, so I decided to design and print a new one. The frame I made is an X style quadcopter that fits all of the electronics from an “Awesome Youbi 130”.
The weight of my printed frame was 36.1 grams. I will see if I can get weight lower and frame stronger. I just printed the first one and am testing it now. Seems great, but I haven’t crashed it too badly yet 😉
