  • Parametric Fractal Trees 3D Print Model

    Parametric Fractal Trees 3D Print Model

    Summary
    This is a modified version of an OpenSCAD example by Torsten Paul. With the original one, after extruding, the objects suffered of some strange gapes especially when using higher angles.
    I added a few parameters and other modifications to be able to generate 3D printable fractal trees needed for a student research project. The base is parametric too and can be generated with the same parameters as the trees.
    Other options:
    minimum and maximum angle of the branches
    generating random trees or producing repeatable results at each build;
    with height 0, the tree will be colored and not extruded

  • Parametric 4-post mounting plate for symmetrical circuit boards 3D Print Model

    Summary
    I’ve made enough 1-off designs for specific boards to motivate me into designing a fully parametric mounting plate. The included .stl file is for a Raspberry Pi with 6mm magnets as the mounting method, but you could use screws or glue just as well. The .f3d file can quickly generate similar mounting plates for other symmetrical 4-mounting-point circuit boards.

  • Parametric Chain Link Drive Pulley 3D Print Model

    Parametric Chain Link Drive Pulley 3D Print Model

    Summary
    I had a desire to make some small chain drives for some of my models, but wanted to use some classic chain link style chair rather than proper chain drive chain. I had a look on thingiverse and discovered that nobody else had made a model for this. So, after scratching around with a pencil to work out what parameters I needed, I jumped on OpenSCAD and came up with two parametric models. This one has a neck, holes and nut slots for screwing it onto a shaft while the other is just a disk with the chain recesses which can be more easily adapted to other pulley body designs.
    The chain size and number of link pairs determines the size of the pulley. So the important variables to fiddle with are;
    Llength: This is the outside length dimension of a single linkLwidth: This is the outside width dimension of a single linkLthickness: This is the diameter of the link “wire”
    N: The number of chain link pairs around the pulley. Please note this is pairs of links not the number of single links.
    The pulley neck size is controlled by the following parameters;
    Pwidth: Width of the pulley main drum which the chain recesses are cut into.PstemD: This is the diameter of the pulley attachment neck. There is nothing to stop you putting dimensions in here that can’t accommodate the retaining screw or the shaft. We leave that to you, the user, to figure something sensible.PneckL: This is the desired neck length
    AxleD: This is the axle diameterScrewD: This is the retaining screw diameter
    There are a bunch of other parameters that you may wish to tweak too;
    Ptol: Is the printing tolerance. It is used to provide a bit of space around the chain profile so that chain will fit into the recess despite a bit of spread from the extruded plastic.PtolThk: This is a printing allowance for the “radially” orientated link thickness. This allows a bit of extra on either side of the link slot so any sagging of the printed filament can be easily removed or at least won’t interfere with the link sliding into the slot.Wclr: On either side the the tangential link is a cutout slot. This parameter just controls the size of this slot.
    CutD:There are some very stylish decorative holes in the end of the pulley. This parameter controls the diameter of these.CutN: This controls the number of these extremely stylish holes.
    Hopefully this is all clear enough.
    I feel the model will work well for larger chains where the printing tolerances are less of a factor in the final printed shape.
    I trust this will be useful to you.

  • Parametric Motor Retainer 3D Print Model

    Parametric Motor Retainer 3D Print Model

    Summary
    This parametric motor retainer uses the “Poor man’s openscad screw library” found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:8796
    The settings in the scad file are adapted to my printer, aside from the dimensions at the top, you may need to adjust the “fudge_factor” setting until you get an appropriate fit on your body tube and a well-functioning thread.
    Use this at your own risk, if you do not have sufficient layer adhesion, this part will not retain your motor when the ejection charge goes off. Ensure that your printed part is sufficiently strong before using it in flight! If the threads are too loose, they can slip off the retainer ring, so be sure your thread clearance is tight enough as well. The clearance should be as tight as possible while the threads are still functional.
    Note that not all adhesives work well with printed plastics! Be sure you have a strong bond between the retainer ring and the motor mount tube before you use it for flight.

  • Plate Clip – Parametric 3D Print Model

    Plate Clip – Parametric 3D Print Model

    Summary
    I had a couple things artsy things around the house that have just been sitting around on tables collecting dust or worse and I decided to hang them up.
    I designed this parametrically in Fusion 360 and i’ve included the Fusion 360 file here so you can make one that fits your needs.
    Though it probably doesn’t make much difference… since I’ve designed this for a round flat object, instead of a flat mating surface on the clip it actually takes into account the curvature of the plate when it draws the clip.

  • parametric sanding block sandpaper holder

    parametric sanding block sandpaper holder

    Summary
    A customizable sanding block designed to economize by not requiring much extra length of sandpaper to wrap around and clamp in place. Default dimensions are small, but you can make it whatever size you like. You can also customize the end angles. The clamping pieces are printed inside, in close enough proximity that they don’t tip over during printing, and probably stick lightly to the inside of the block. I was able to pry them off easily with a screwdriver afterwards.
    Vitamins required: 2 M5 bolts (around 1.5-2cm long) and 2 M5 square nuts. Wing bolts might be nice if you have them, otherwise you’ll need a screwdriver to install the sandpaper. Or use hex-head bolts and print out a pair of knurled knobs. If you want to make a soft pad on the bottom, you can use some self-adhesive felt or cork, or glue on a piece of denim from old jeans.
