The first T-54 prototype was completed at Nizhny Tagil by the end of 1945. Initial production ramp up settled for 1947 at Nizhny Tagil, and 1948 for Kharkov were halted and curtailed as many problems were uncovered; the T-34-85 still accounted for 88 percent of production through the 50’s. The T-54 eventually became the main tank for armoured units of the Soviet Army, armies of the Warsaw Pact countries, and many others. T-54s and T-55s have been involved in many of the world’s armed conflicts since the later part of the 20th century.

It was designed and built by the British company Vickers Defence Systems (now known as BAE Systems Land & Armaments).Vickers Defence Systems began to develop a successor to Challenger 1 as a private venture in 1986. A £90 million deal for a demonstrator vehicle was finalised in January 1989. In June 1991, the Ministry of Defence placed a £520 million order for 140 vehicles, with a further 268 ordered in 1994. Production began in 1993 and the unit’s tanks were delivered in July 1994, replacing the Challenger 1. The tank entered service with the British Army in 1998, with the last delivered in 2002. It is expected to remain in service until 2035. The Royal Army of Oman ordered 18 Challenger 2s in 1993 and a further 20 tanks in November 1997.

The main weapon of the T-64BB tank is the 125-mm smooth-bore gun-launcher 2A46M-1, stabilized in two planes, coupled with the loading mechanism and capable of firing guided missiles of the complex 9K112-1 “Cobra”. Instead of obsolete tube radio stations R-123M and TPU R-124 installed on previous versions of the T-64, the T-64BV and T-64B1V tanks were equipped with semiconductor radio stations R-173 “Abzats-R”, receivers R-173P “Abzats-P” and TPU R-174.
